Perhaps all of the most mistaken of all information given by Google is they have to update your site regularly. This is then translated into writing a blog.
It seems every single company in the UK is paying someone who knows very little about the product or service to write something relevant and of interest that somehow perhaps magically will improve the traffic to the website.
The result is an avalanche of useless content that no one reads and has in fact just a regurgitation of what is currently available on the Internet. In fact if your website is ranked number one in Google feel keyword, you don't want to update the site at all. This is because the minute the page size changes Google will be index your website and we score it. Of course if you're number one you can only go down.
Another casualty incessant blogging is the top level pages, the most important service or product description pages, rarely updated. These core pages rank poorly in Google, and is there not updated can only go downwards.
With a number of clients we have told quite simply that if they remove all of the poor quality content blog posts on the website, contrary to current SEO belief the website will actually improving Google ranking, with resulting improvement in the number of conversions.
This site for example ranks highly for a number of competitive keywords, the word blog does not appear on this website except for this page. So how does this work. The only real value of the blog is that it creates a lower level page with an alternative anchor text, linking to core hub pages further up the website. You can do this by creating pages of relevance using a site structure optimisation strategy that is much more manageable and successful.
The number of business owners who are paying through the nose for content which they admit is of poor quality is outstanding.
Creating noise, is not a successful Internet strategy.
The number of clients the Benedict has who have a blog is very low. This is not to say that if you have something of relevance to say, and you enjoy talking around your subject the blog is a bad idea, just that they execution and quality of the content, along with the relevant anchor text strategy is paramount for a "blog" content to be successful.
